International Labour Organization:
The 13th African Regional Meeting (ARM 2015) of the International Labour Organization (ILO) will be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 30 November-03 December 2015 in the presence of H.E. Dr Mulatu Teshome, President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and Mr Guy Ryder, Director-General of the ILO.
Some 500 delegates from 49 African member States will attend the high-level meeting to discuss and agree on how best to promote an inclusive and sustainable development in Africa through Decent Work.
With more than 18 million new jobs needed every year in Africa, creating quality jobs for young African men and women is one of the most urgent post-2015 challenges.
ARM 2015 will focus particularly on the implementation of the 2030 sustainable development goals in the region while addressing key issues related to migration, youth employment and ICTs, green economy/jobs as well as the transition from the informal to the formal economy in Africa.
Ethiopia’s Minister of Labour and Social Affairs (MOLSA), Hon. Abdulfatah Abdullahi Hassan will be hosting this platform for dialogue which brings together, every four years, ILO’s tripartite constituents – Governments, Workers and Employers’ organizations, together with the political, economic and social actors of the world of work in Africa.
High-Profile participants include Senior Representatives of the African Union Commission, the African Development Bank, and the UN System, including UNECA Executive-Secretary Carlos Lopes and ILO’s Deputy Director-Generals, Sandra Polaski (Policy), Gilbert Houngbo (Field Operations and Partnerships) and Greg Vines (Management & Reform) as well as the Assistant-Director-General and Regional Director for Africa, Aeneas Chapinga Chuma.
The Conference will also provide an opportunity to engage for the first time at the pan-African level in the official signature panel of the 50 for Freedom campaign to end modern slavery. Nearly 21 million people worldwide, across all continents, are victims of modern-day slavery. In Africa 3.7 million people are affected.
This year’s theme will be taken up in the Report that the ILO Director-General will present to the Meeting, entitled “Towards inclusive and sustainable development in Africa through decent work ”.
The proposed agenda is to undertake a final review of progress made on the implementation of the “Decent Work Agenda in Africa, 2007-15” and to discuss and agree on strategic vision for the ILO in the Africa region.
